Chrysler Atlantic - the original press release: Chrysler Atlantic -- What Two-Door Luxury Performance Was Meant to Be Chrysler Atlantic was designed in the spirit of luxury French custom coachbuilders of the late 30's, whose artists created distinctive, highly-stylistic design statements that were purebred luxury coupes. The Chrysler Atlantic concept vehicle will debut to the public at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 7,1995. Classically-inspired, Atlantic continues the role as a vision for the constant evolution of the Chrysler brand image--one that places a great deal of importance on style, presence, heritage and performance. "You probably can't find a period in history like the late 30's with a stronger statement of incredibly elegant, romantic, image-leading coupes," says Tom Gale, vice president of Product Design and International Operations. "But, the two-door market as we used to know it is gone:' Today, there are sedans that really do everything that the coupe used to do. "They're sporty and aggressive, and you don't need a two-door to express yourself anymore," continues Gale. "And that's too bad, because we're losing an automotive art form--an incredibly elegant statement that makes people say `now thats a coupe!" The Atlantic's design and proportions defy four doors. A distinctive wind split begins on the hood, coritinues through the roof and concludes with a thin, neon center high-mounted stop light (CHMSL). This same feature continues throughout the cabin, with a neon light that goes right down the center of the headliner, from the windshield to the backlight. In the rear, a unique neon taillight strip runs the breadth of the vehicle. Under the long, graceful hood lies a smooth 4.0-liter, "straight eight" engine, with dual overhead cams and 32 valves. Beneath Atlantic's distinctive fenders are tires of heroic size-- 21 inch on the front and 22 on the rear. As testament to the designer's artistic vision and attention to detail, the sophisticated interior features exotic, flowing lines, elegant trim, leather seating for four and gold-trimmed, classic "watch-face" gauges. Rear passengers can adjust their own speakers, or put on individual headphones. Chrysler Atlantic--conceived by a longing for the days when cars were designed on an artist's canvas. It's what a two-door luxury performance car was always meant to be--bold, classically proportioned, beautiful, sophisticated and bigger than life.
