Unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in early 1969, the non-running AMX/2 surprised everyone as the first evidence that tiny AMC was toying with an advanced mid-engine sports car. Styling, created under company design chief Dick Teague, featured an "airfoil" shape, and managed to be interesting -- swoopy without being cartoonish. Graceful simplicity was the watchword from curved nose to "Kamm" tail. A fastback roofline with a dorsal "spine" floated above a flat, ribbed engine cover-cum- deck. Central twin exhausts implied a V-S, which was planned for but not installed in this purely speculative exercise. Still, public response was wildly enthusiastic.
